Ken Jennings responded Tuesday to the unexpected ouster of his “Jeopardy!” cohost Mayim Bialik, saying that the move from Sony “took me off guard.”

“It took me off guard, because I loved working with my Mayim and I’m going to miss her,” Jennings said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I can’t speak to her decision-making process or her opinions about it. But on my end, I’m just a fan of ‘Jeopardy!’ and I’m always delighted to host when they call upon me. I just feel extremely lucky to have even been considered for this job as a non-broadcaster.”

Jeopardy! is making a major change. Mayim Bialik will no longer host the quiz show, the The Big Bang Theory alum shared the news on her Instagram Friday.

It was just last summer that Bialik was named the long-running game show’s permanent co-host, opposite Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings. In her new post, Bialik wrote that she was informed by studio Sony that she would “no longer be hosting the syndicated version” of the show. She did not give a reason for her exit.

On Friday (May 12), Rolling Stone reported claims alleging the set of the singer’s eponymous talk show was a toxic workplace, quoting one current and 10 former staffers as saying they were “bullied and intimidated,” “overworked,” “underpaid” and “traumatized,” among other things, while working for Kelly’s producers. The outlet also noted the staffers, past and present, thought Kelly was unaware of what was going on behind the scenes. “NBC is protecting the show because it’s their new money maker, but Kelly has no clue how unhappy her staff is,” one person said. It’s a hosting switcheroo on “Jeopardy!”

According to Deadline, Ken Jennings will host the show’s final week of episodes in season 39, taking over from Mayim Bialik, who is standing with Writers Guild of America strikers.

The final episodes, which are set to be filmed between May 16 and May 19, were set to be hosted by Bialik, but she reportedly declined her hosting duties in solidarity with the WGA.

“Jeopardy!” is a union show, with contributions and questions written by WGA members in advance of the season and the current strike.

Writers on the show have been on the picket lines as part of the strike.

On Twitter, Jennings was roundly criticized for crossing the picket line rather than standing with Bialik and the writers.
