AMD introduced its EPYC 4004-series processors aimed at entry-level single socket servers designed for dedicated hosting and small businesses. The new EPYC 4004-series CPUs feature up to 16 cores and use AM5 packaging, providing a cost-effective platform that supports essential enterprise-grade capabilities.

AMD’s EPYC 4004 processors are essentially Ryzen 7000-series CPUs with four, six, eight, 12 or 16 cores, up to 5.70 GHz boost clocks, up to 64 MB L3 cache, and up to 28 PCIe Gen5 lanes. The EPYC chips support up to 192 GB of DDR5-5200 memory with ECC. The platform features RAIDXpert2 for servers, AMD secure processor enclave, and transparent memory encryption (TSME). The EPYC 4004 lineup includes eight models with TDPs of 65W–170W. 

AMD has expanded its product lineup by introducing the EPYC 4004 server processors, which for the first time, utilize the consumer-oriented socket AM5, shared with the Ryzen 7000 desktop CPUs. These new server processors, based on the Zen 4 architecture, come equipped with up to 16 cores and 32 threads, mirroring the core and thread counts of the Ryzen 7000 series. The EPYC 4004 chips support two DDR5 memory channels and are distinctive for their official support for ECC (Error Correcting Code) memory, accommodating up to 192GB of RAM.

Many of our readers are already familiar with the Supermicro MicroCloud. The MicroCloud is popular in web and dedicated hosting markets where sharing the chassis, power, and cooling are desired while still maintaining physical nodes. At Computex 2023, the STH team saw the new AMD AM5 version of the MicroCloud designed to fit 8x AMD Ryzen nodes into a single chassis.

The system itself is the upcoming Supermicro AS-3015MR-H8TNR. This is a 3U chassis (CSE-938NH-R2K20BP2) with sixteen 3.5″ front bays.

Each node gets two of these 3.5″ bays.
