Social media appeals to reunite owner with injured dog are likely hoaxes

Social media posts appealing to find the owner of a dog allegedly struck by a car have been shared widely across Facebook. But this does not appear to be genuine, as locations for the same “hit-and-run” incident claimed to have injured the same dog have been repeated across local groups ranging from the UK to America.

Multiple Facebook posts circulating since 28 November use the same image of a dog with cream fur being held wrapped in a blanket with blood on its muzzle, inside what appears to be a veterinary surgery.

The posts, some of which have been shared more than a thousand times, all share almost identical captions. They say: “I am urgently looking for this guy’s owner [heartbreak emoji] found him lying on the side road in [location].

Missing man hoax appeals for ‘Walter Peters’ recirculate with different photo

Multiple posts on Facebook are sharing a hoax appeal for a missing man with dementia. The posts appear in community groups around the world.

One post, for instance, appears in a buy-and-sell Facebook group for Twydall in Kent, and has over 1,000 shares. It says: “FLOOD YOUR FEEDS ~ MISSING!! In #twydall Our Dad, Walter Peters aged 73 drove out last night with his dog Cami and he still hasn’t returned. He doesn’t know where he’s going, he has dementia. There is a silver alert activated on him. Please help bump this post so we can get him home safely”. 

Almost identical posts appear in groups for Malvern and Stourport in Worcestershire and Lismore in Scotland.

Other versions can also be found in groups abroad, including Samoa, Dartmouth in Nova Scotia in Canada,
