Area organizations dedicated to equality host leading jurist on equal justice efforts in New York – Saratogian

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Hon. Edwina G. Richardson-Mendelson, a leader of the New York State Unified Court System and the state’s Equal Justice in Courts Initiative, will address the public at 5 p.m. on Wednedsday, Oct. 18 at The Saratoga Hilton.

The event, presented by MLK Saratoga, the Saratoga Immigration Coalition, Mary A. Carter Temple #362 and When People Work, is free and is a presentation on the status of equal justice in the state.

Throughout her long career in public service, Mendelson has worked to afford all New Yorkers equal access to justice. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler announce shows in 2 San Francisco Bay Area cities – MSN


Good things come in pairs: two comedy legends, two Bay Area shows. 

Emmy-winning best pals Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are bringing their “Restless Leg Tour” to the Bay Area for back-to-back sets in San Francisco and Oakland early next year. 

The San Francisco show is scheduled to take place at the Masonic on Friday, Jan. 26, with the Oakland show coming a day later at the Paramount Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Fey and Poehler first met in the early 1990s while both were working in Chicago’s famed improv scene. The duo became “Saturday Night Live” royalty for their stint as co-hosts of the show’s “Weekend Update” segment and for their run during the 2008 election when Fey played Sarah Palin and Poehler portrayed Hillary Clinton.

Police Civilian Oversight Authority Jamaica is hosting a poster making contest for the students of the secondary schools of Area One. The organization has announced the poster making competition for the students of Jamaica under the initiative of Transforming our Police Service (TOPS). The theme for the poster making competition is: Imagining a force 4 good.

The competition is open to the schools of regions in Area 1, that is Hanover and Westmoreland. The Police Civilian Oversight Authority Jamaica has taken to their social media account to share some important information about the competition. They shared the list of schools which are eligible to participate in the Poster Making Competition.

Springfield area bridge to be dedicated today in honor of U.S. Army Lieutenant Peter H. Monfore

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony at 2pm CT this afternoon (Sept. 16, 2023) to honor U.S. Army Lieutenant Peter H. Monfore, son of Howland and Gertrude Monfore of Springfield and Sioux Falls.

The ceremony will be at the Community Services Center in Springfield (605 8th Street).

The Emanuel Creek Bridge on SD HWY 50, west of Tyndall, will be dedicated to Lt Monfore.

On September 19, 1951, his company was ordered to lead a night assault on Hill 851 during the battle of Heartbreak Ridge in North Korea. His company was successful in capturing Hill 851. Monfore was killed in action that day while defending his position on Hill 851.

Hiero Day Showcases Lasting Love for Hip-Hop in Bay Area

Beats and rhymes brought thousands of Bay Area residents and visitors to Oakland’s Frank Ogawa Plaza on Labor Day to enjoy the 11th version of Hiero Day, a music block party thrown by the Hieroglyphics Crew.

But a love of community and valuing of its keepers were what kept crowds happily greeting one another, complimenting outfits, sampling snacks from food trucks, dancing to familiar fast favorites or swaying and snapping selfies before slower classics.
