South Dakota bridge to be dedicated to PFC John Tuin

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony to honor U.S. Army Private First Class John Tuin.

The ceremony will be Aug. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post 184 in Estelline, 222 Main St.

The state Highway 28 bridge over the Big Sioux River, west of Estelline, will be dedicated as the Pfc John Tuin Bridge.

Tuin was reported missing in action on Oct. 6, 1952, while fighting the enemy in Korea. Tuin’s remains are still unaccounted for.

Naming bridges in honor of our combat veterans who died while serving their country is an initiative of Gov. Kristi Noem and the South Dakota departments of military, transportation, and veterans affairs.

South Dakota bridge to be dedicated in honor of fallen soldier

PIERRE — The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony to honor U.S. Army Cpl. John C. McDowell.

The ceremony will be July 24 at 11 a.m. at the Travel Plaza in Corsica, U.S. Highway 281 and Main Street.

State Highway 44 bridge over Andes Creek, just west of US 281, will be dedicated as the Cpl. John C. McDowell Bridge.

McDowell began his tour of service on Sept. 30, 1967, during the Vietnam War. A traumatic event ultimately resulted in the loss of his life on Jan. 9, 1968, in Long Kkanh province, South Vietnam.

Footage of dead birds on a frozen lake is from South Dakota, not China

Multiple posts on social media falsely claim a video shows hundreds of birds that were supposedly killed by severe temperatures of -52°C in Xinjiang, China. 

In fact, the footage comes from South Dakota in the US. 

The video seemingly shows hundreds of dead birds frozen to the surface of an expanse of water. 

It has been shared on both X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook with the caption: “Today, temperatures in Xinjiang, China dropped 45° [sic] almost instantly to a low of -52℃ (-61.6℉), kiIIing hundreds of waterfowl. Will they blame this on global warming?” 

While temperatures in Xinjiang, in the north west of China, were reported to have reached -52°C in recent days, the video does not show scenes from this region.

PIERRE — The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a pair of state bridge dedication ceremonies to honor fallen heroes.

Beckers

U.S. Army Specialist 5 John P. Beckers will be honored in a ceremony on Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. CDT at the VFW in Burke on Main Street.

The Ponca Creek bridge on state Highway 47, near Burke, will be dedicated to SP5 Beckers.

Spc. Beckers distinguished himself by heroic actions on Sept. 17, 1968, while serving with Company D, 65th Engineer Battalion in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a combat operation, his unit came under intense enemy fire and sustained several casualties. With complete disregard for his own…
