Posts being shared on social media misinterpret comments made by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to falsely claim he pledged to build 46,000 houses “just for Muslims”.

A video of Mr Khan speaking has been shared with the caption: “Sadiq Khan says he will build 46,000 new homes in London just for Muslims who want to live closer to a mosque.”

While this is a genuine interview with Mr Khan, he did not make the comments attributed to him in the posts. 

The video shows Mr Khan during an interview shared by the Islam Channel before May’s mayoral elections in which he won 43.8% of the vote and was reelected for his third consecutive term. A post shared more than 100 times on Facebook claims a three-year-old girl was found alone in a street in Poole, and taken to a police station. 

But Dorset Police has no record of this occurring, and the post is virtually identical to others we’ve seen shared in locations around the USA, and in Trinidad and Tobago. 

The Facebook post features an image of a young girl, seemingly asleep, with a dummy in her mouth and a scar-like mark on her face. 

It was shared in the UK in a Facebook group called ‘Bournemouth , Poole, Christchurch :Advertising, Buy and Sell [sic]’ on 17 September, alongside a caption that said the “3 year old baby girl, Mila, was found walking behind a home here in #poole”.

A video is being shared on social media with the suggestion it shows military equipment left by US forces in Afghanistan. But it actually shows a US military depot in California.

The video shows hundreds of tanks and other military vehicles lined up in rows in a desert-like landscape. It has been shared with the caption: “The US pulled out of Afghanistan and left all this stuff there. Now imagine if the US would have given it to Ukraine and not the Taliban. By the way, did Zelensky ask the Taliban for the stuff already?”

US forces did reportedly leave some military equipment behind after they withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021—including 73 aircraft, nearly 100 vehicles and other equipment—but this is not what the footage shows.

A screenshot appears to show a Guardian opinion column written by energy secretary Ed Miliband MP headlined “Our GB Energy will become the envy of the world just like our NHS”. But this isn’t a real article. 

A post including the screenshot has been viewed more than 194,000 times on X (formerly Twitter), and it has also been shared on Facebook.

A Google search shows no such article currently exists on the Guardian’s website. The outlet’s opinion section does not feature any articles published by Mr Miliband on 6 September 2024, the date shown in the screenshot.

A video circulating online appears to show a televised phone call in which former US president and Republican nominee Donald Trump seemingly insults soldiers on Fox News. But this is not a real broadcast and features an impersonator’s voice. 

The footage shows a TV screen that appears to show a live call with Mr Trump broadcast on the Fox News channel. Alongside a photo of him, text says: “On the phone President Donald Trump” and he supposedly says: “The amount of stupidity it would take to do that. I don’t even possess that on my worst day. Excuse me I wouldn’t be in battle because I’m not some dumbf**k redneck who gets called into war and volunteers for stupid service and conflicts.”
