An edited screenshot of a CNN article featuring US Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz is circulating online. 

The screenshot appears to show an article on the politics page of the CNN website with the headline: “Harris and Walz pledges [sic] free Costco membership for all SNAP recipients”, and features a photo of them on a stage at Temple University in Philadelphia earlier this month

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP)—sometimes referred to as food stamps—provides food benefits to low-income families in the US. In 2023, 42.1 million people per month on average, or 12.6% of US residents, were on SNAP.

Claim ‘African immigrant stabbed a British police officer’ in Manchester is false – Full Fact

Claims that “an African immigrant stabbed a British police officer” in Manchester last week have been widely circulating on social media alongside a video that claims to show the aftermath. But Greater Manchester Police has confirmed no officers or members of the public were stabbed during an incident near Piccadilly Gardens on 8 August. 

One post on X, formerly Twitter, has been viewed more than 2.3 million times and has also spread to Facebook

The video being shared shows people running and a police officer on the floor. An arrow points to that officer with the caption “police officer stabbed”. Claim two protesters were ‘stabbed by Muslims in Stoke’ is false – Full Fact

Claims that two protesters were “stabbed by Muslims in Stoke” over the weekend have been widely circulating on social media. But Staffordshire Police has confirmed “this information is false and no stabbings have been reported to police, despite videos fuelling speculation on social media”.

A video being shared alongside the claim shows a large police presence and people shouting. The police appear to be standing around someone on the ground as an officer attends to them.

After shots rang out at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania on 13 July, social media became a hotbed for claims, counter-claims and conspiracy theories.

Images of a bloodied Donald Trump raising his fist would lead news coverage in the days after the attempted assassination attempt, which killed attendee Corey Comperatore. At the time of writing two others are in a serious condition.

The FBI named Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the “subject involved”. He was shot dead at the scene.

World leaders including President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Keir Starmer were quick to condemn the attack on Mr Trump, which left him with a wound but no stitches to his right ear, according to his son Eric.
