Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks to force TikTok to raise age rating to ’17+’ • Iowa Capital Dispatch

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird filed a lawsuit this week seeking to require TikTok to change its age rating in the Apple App Store.

Bird is seeking a temporary injunction that would require TikTok, a video social media app, to change its age rating to “17+” in the App Store until the lawsuit is resolved. The state attorney general sued TikTok in January, claiming that the app and its owner were deceiving parents with the current “12+” age rating, as some videos posted on the platform feature explicit material, including sexual content, profanity, drugs and self-harm.

Bird argued in the lawsuit that TikTok not abiding by the age warning system violates the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.

House votes to force sale of TikTok by Chinese owner

The House voted overwhelmingly to pass legislation that will force TikTok to separate itself from its parent company in China or be banned in the United States, a major step toward a crackdown motivated by fears that the popular social media company could be used for spying or manipulation by the Chinese Communist Party.

The House voted 352-65 on Wednesday to pass the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. The bill, introduced by Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), would make it unlawful for app stores or web hosting services to provide services to social media applications owned and operated by the Chinese company ByteDance. This includes TikTok, which is one of the larger social media platforms in the U.S. If TikTok wants to continue operating within the…

Bill that would force ByteDance to sell TikTok clears House panel unanimously

Bipartisan legislation that would force Chinese government-linked ByteDance to sell off TikTok cleared a House committee vote unanimously on Thursday — with lawmakers defying an all-out pressure campaign by the app and disgruntled users to kill the bill.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act by a 50-0 vote during a markup session.

The bill would bar companies like Apple or Google from offering TikTok on their app stores or providing the social platform with web hosting services in the US unless ByteDance divests itself with 180 days.

The US Air Force has denied that an AI-powered drone ‘attacked’ operators in a simulation

Claims that a US Air Force-trained artificial intelligence (AI) powered drone “attacked” its human operators and communication towers when it was supposed to target enemy weapons have been shared widely on social media.

One tweet, shared hundreds of times, says: “The Air Force trained an AI drone to destroy SAM [surface-to-air-missile] sites.

“Human operators sometimes told the drone to stop.

“The AI then started attacking the human operators.

“So then it was trained to not attack humans.

“It started attacking comm towers so humans couldn’t tell it to stop.”

This text is accompanied by a screenshot, which gives a further description of how in a simulation the trained AI drone had “killed the operator because that person was keeping it from…

Oslo hosting world’s largest warship ‘illogical’ show of force, says Russia – EURACTIV.com

Norway hosting the world’s largest warship, the US aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, in its waters over the next four days, is an illogical and harmful show of force, the Russian Embassy to Oslo said.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is 333 metres long, 76 metres high, weighing around 100,000 tonnes. In addition to a crew of 4,500 people, the ship carries 90 aeroplanes and helicopters. Oslo is likely the first harbour the massive ship will visit as it is bound to conduct several exercises with the Norwegian Army.

“The aircraft carrier group’s visit and presence gives the Armed Forces a unique opportunity to further develop cooperation and work more closely with our most important ally, the United States.” the Norwegian Armed Forces wrote in a press release.

“Several exercises are…
