SNP minister wanted to offer advice to French politicians on hosting Olympics and Tour de France

A prominent SNP minister was urged to offer advice to French politicians about how to host major sporting events like the Tour de France and the Olympics. Maree Todd highlighted the success of the Cycling World Championships in Scotland as the reason for this.

The Scottish Government’s sports minister headed out to Nice and Marseille in September to mark the start of the Rugby World Cup. Both those cities are twinned with Edinburgh and Glasgow respectively, and she met some local politicians while she was there.

We previously told how she was accused of boasting about the “amazing” time she had in France by angered Scots taxpayers. Ms Todd shared a video of her dancing the Dashing White Sergeant before going on to detail how she had enjoyed: “…an amazing meal at the Nice School of…

French government has not restricted internet access to neighbourhoods in France

A press release appearing to be from the French government, claiming that the internet is being restricted in certain neighbourhoods across France, is being shared online. But the press release is fake.

The posts share an image of what looks like a press release written in French from the Interior Ministry. The Interior Ministry is comparable to the Home Office in the UK and is the department of the French government that deals with emergency and crisis situations.

The fake press release, which is dated 2 July, says internet access will be restricted at night in certain neighbourhoods from 3 July. It says these “exceptional measures” are in order to prevent online platforms and social media being used to coordinate illegal activities and incite violence.
