Picture of police kneeling in front of Muslim men is AI-generated – Full Fact

A picture appearing to show a number of police officers kneeling as though in prayer in front of a group of men in Islamic dress has been shared widely on Threads

What the post fails to mention, however, is that the image is AI-generated. Some of the comments in the thread appear to indicate that people believe it to be genuine.

The same picture has also been shared widely on X (formerly Twitter), in the aftermath of violent disorder which took place across England and Northern Ireland following the fatal stabbing of three children in Southport on 29 July

Very quickly an incorrect name, “Ali Al-Shakati”, spread online, alongside claims he had recently come to the UK on a small boat, or was Muslim or Syrian.

In fact, the teenager charged in connection with…

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz video in front of a communist poster has been edited – Full Fact

A video circulating on social media appears to show Democratic presidential candidate and current US Vice President, Kamala Harris, with her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, posing for a selfie in front of a Revolutionary Communists of America poster.

But the sign has been digitally altered. The original footage shows it actually referenced Mr Walz’s past role as a high school football coach during his career as a school teacher.

Several media reports and photographs from an event on 9 August in Phoenix, Arizona, show Ms Harris and Mr Walz in front of two posters. The larger one has a brown background and says “Kamala and the Coach”. The other is smaller and reads: “Democrats protect abortion”.

In altered versions of the footage being shared…

Picture of Emmanuel Macron in front of fire is AI-generated

A picture circulating on social media appears to show French President Emmanuel Macron sitting on a chair in the middle of the street, a pile of rubbish burning behind him.

This isn’t a real photo—it appears to have been created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Full Fact was unable to find any evidence the president sat for such a picture, and it bears a resemblance to other AI images that have been shared online amid the recent riots in France.

We have found versions of the images shared online since as early as March.

There has been widespread unrest in the country since 27 June, when a police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old named Nahel M in a Paris suburb during a traffic stop.

We have not been able to find the original version of the AI…

Digital data loss is troubling Nepal in front of the helpless government

Digital data loss

In March, various government servers at the National Information Technology Centre (NITC) experienced issues one after another. Initially reported as a simple technical problem, the NITC later reported that it lost data from various government agencies.

Stating that digital data loss was due to technical reasons, the NITC has not been able to find out how many details they lost and how.

The NITC’s list of responsibilities is long. It has been tasked with the responsibility of storing, managing and processing government data along with ensuring its safety. It also needs to provide shared computing resources, consult the government on various IT-related issues, register government domains and manage government networks.

At the same time, the NITC–which helps the government in…
