A video is circulating on social media with misleading claims it shows an attempted assault by “Muslim immigrants” on young women in France.

In the footage, a group of young men in a pedestrian underpass appear to try to accost some women as they attempt to walk through, before a fight breaks out and the men are left lying on the ground after being hit by the women.

It has been shared over 2,100 times on X, formerly Twitter, and a screenshot of the video also appears on Facebook with the caption: “In France, a gang of Muslim immigrants tried to assault a group of young women.

“Little did they know what awaited them. Don’t mess with the French women!”

In the early hours of tomorrow morning, the two US presidential nominees will go head-to-head in their first live debate ahead of polling day on 5 November. 

Republican former president Donald Trump will go up against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris at 9pm tonight EDT or 2am UK time. From this side of the pond, you can watch it live on the BBC News channel or Channel 4. 

The event will last for 90 minutes with two commercial breaks in which the nominees will not be allowed to speak with campaign staff. There will be no studio audience, no opening statements and only the two moderators can ask questions.

A photograph of a hooded person carrying a gun is being shared on social media with false claims it shows the attacker involved in a school shooting in the US state of Georgia this week.

The image, which depicts a person wearing a hoodie and jeans carrying a weapon in front of a set of double doors, has been shared on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Threads with captions linking it to the attack at Apalachee High School on 4 September.

A suspect, identified as Colt Gray, 14, is accused of opening fire at his high school in the city of Winder, killing two teachers and two pupils and injuring another eight pupils and one teacher.

An edited screenshot of a CNN article featuring US Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz is circulating online. 

The screenshot appears to show an article on the politics page of the CNN website with the headline: “Harris and Walz pledges [sic] free Costco membership for all SNAP recipients”, and features a photo of them on a stage at Temple University in Philadelphia earlier this month. 

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (SNAP)—sometimes referred to as food stamps—provides food benefits to low-income families in the US. In 2023, 42.1 million people per month on average, or 12.6% of US residents, were on SNAP.

Claims that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has “frozen” a contract for 80 fighter jets from France over the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov are circulating on social media, as part of a fake Al Jazeera video. But there is no evidence to support this claim. 

One post on X, viewed more than 366,000 times, is captioned: “The UAE has frozen a contract to purchase 80 fighter jets from France: Durov’s arrest has angered the sheikhs.” It has also been shared on Facebook. 

Mr Durov was arrested on landing in Paris on 24 August as part of a cyber crime investigation. Mr Durov is originally from Russia, but now runs Telegram from Dubai in the UAE, where he lives. He holds citizenship of the UAE and France.
