GoDaddy breach exposes 1.2 million customer accounts

The domain registrar and web hosting company GoDaddy has revealed that it suffered a data breach in which the user data of 1.2m of its customers may have been accessed.

In a filing with with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company’s chief information security officer Demetrius Comes explained that an “unauthorized third party” had gained access to its managed WordPress hosting environment.

Global web hosting company GoDaddy reports data breach – Security

Hackers have, since September, accessed usernames, passwords, email addresses and SSL private keys for GoDaddy customers by compromising their Managed WordPress hosting environment.

The US-based Internet domain registrar and web hosting company said an unauthorised third party accessed GoDaddy’s provisioning system in its legacy code base for Managed WordPress using a compromised password.

The adversary began exploiting the vulnerability on September 6, and GoDaddy discovered the unauthorised access on November 17, according to the company.

Web hosting giant GoDaddy has reported a data breach with U.S. financial regulators, and warns that data on 1.2 million customers may have been accessed.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, GoDaddy’s chief information security officer Demetrius Comes said the company detected unauthorized access to its systems where it hosts and manages its customers’ WordPress servers. WordPress is a web-based content management system used by millions to set up blogs or websites. GoDaddy lets customers host their own WordPress installs on their servers.

Nov 22 (Reuters) – Web hosting company GoDaddy Inc (GDDY.N) said on Monday email addresses of up to 1.2 million active and inactive Managed WordPress customers had been exposed in an unauthorized third-party access.

The company said the incident was discovered on Nov. 17 and the third-party accessed the system using a compromised password.

“We identified suspicious activity in our Managed WordPress hosting environment and immediately began an investigation with the help of an IT forensics firm and contacted law enforcement,” Chief Information Security Officer Demetrius Comes said in a filing.
