Will US law banning TikTok prevail on secret government evidence?

On July 28, the director of Columbia University’s Knight First Amendment Institute posted a US Justice Department document on social media related to TikTok’s legal challenge against the company’s potential ban in the United States.
“The Biden admin has finally told the DC Circuit why Americans can’t have access to TikTok,” wrote Jameel Jaffer, on X, formerly Twitter.

The post comprised a page from a brief submitted to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, entirely obscured by black marking and unreadable.

In a subsequent post, Jaffer quipped: “To be fair, not all of the brief is redacted. But the parts that aren’t redacted are no more persuasive than the parts that are.”

The disclosure came months after the US Congress and President Joe Biden

‘French government’ has not called for 90% income tax – Full Fact

A claim being shared on social media that the new French government plans to introduce a 90% tax on income above €400,000 is missing important context.

The post, shared more than 3,900 times on X (formerly known as Twitter) and also circulating on Facebook, says: “French government calls for a new 90% tax on any annual income above €400,000. 90%.”

The New Popular Front won the most seats—182—in the second round of the National Assembly elections, which took place on 7 July.

However, while the New…

TikTok Sues U.S. Government, Alleging Ban Violates First Amendment

Social media giant TikTok has sued the U.S. government, alleging that recently signed legislation that could potentially ban the app violates the First Amendment rights of both the company and its users.

Last month, President Joe Biden signed a foreign aid package that included legislation requiring ByteDance — TikTok’s Chinese parent company — to sell the social media platform within 270 days or be banned from app stores and web-hosting services. The legislation would also create a process through which the president can designate other social media applications with ties to foreign governments as a national security risk and force divestment.

“Congress has taken the unprecedented step of expressly singling out and banning TikTok: a vibrant online forum for…

Elon Musk Warns TikTok Bill Is ‘About Censorship And Government Control’

On Tuesday, billionaire tech executive and X owner Elon Musk raised concerns about a bill making its way through Congress that seeks to clamp down on U.S. access to social media applications such as Chinese-owned TikTok unless they sever ties with foreign adversaries that are deemed a national security threat.

Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist” who championed the “Twitter Files,” responded to a post from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) highlighting text from the legislation that addresses websites and businesses that provide services to social media platforms found to be in violation of proposed law.

“The so-called TikTok ban is a trojan horse. The President will be given the power to ban WEB SITES, not just Apps. The person breaking the new law is deemed to be the U.S….
