Moved by the plight of Ukrainian refugees desperate to escape Russian bombardment across the former Soviet republic, Marco Burstein, 18, of Los Angeles, and Avi Schiffman, 19, of Seattle, used their coding skills to create UkraineTakeShelter.com over three frenzied days in early March.

Since then, more than 18,000 prospective hosts have signed up on the site to offer assistance to refugees seeking matches with hosts in their preferred or convenient locations. On a recent day, Burstein and Schiffman logged 800,000 users.

Grant Student Council Dedicated to Helping Community, Keeping Peers Engaged

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The Grant Student Council, which is comprised of 30 student representatives from fifth and sixth grade, has been busy since the start of the 2020-2021 school year planning and running virtual events and organizing community initiatives to keep students involved and engaged. 

Student council reps are selected by class vote in the fall with one from each homeroom charged with relaying important information on events and activities back to classmates. Members meet with advisors Megan Basile (sixth grade math) and Alyson Oller (fifth grade ELA/social studies) twice a month and, since the start of the year, have been working together to brainstorm ideas for school wide activities, themed spirit days, and more.

YMCA helping teenagers have fun while learning life skills

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Centennial Hills YMCA is hosting a series of programs dedicated to teenagers. The community center decided to offer the three programs after area saw a rise in teen crime back in 2017.

The goal is to provide a safe and productive space for teenagers to talk about mental health, learn life skills and have fun with their peers.

The teens are directly involved in choosing which topics they want to take on.

“Come do something productive that develops them into tomorrow’s community leaders requires that they are at the helm of decision making process from building the framework,” said Jordan Sommaggio, Youth Development Director, YMCA.

The programs are held on the first and the third Saturday of each month.
