Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik, in solidarity with striking WGA writers, stepped down from hosting the hit quiz show this week. Ken Jennings, Jeopardy!‘s alternate host and past champion, then stepped up to take on hosting duties for the season’s final week of filming from May 16 to 19. In doing so, he crossed the writers strike picket line. Disappointing!

Jeopardy!, which is produced by Sony Pictures Television, is a WGA show and features contributions from WGA writers, but the questions were written in advance of a season and the strike.

Mayim Bialik Won’t Host Finals Episodes of “Jeopardy!” Season 39 in Solidarity With WGA Strike

Mayim Bialik won’t be hosting the final week of this season’s “Jeopardy!” episodes in a show of solidarity with the Writers Guild of America strike.

Bialik was slated to host the final episodes of the show’s current season, which are expected to be filmed between May 16 and May 19. Her decision to abstain makes “Jeopardy!” one of the first game shows to be impacted by the ongoing writers strike. The show’s writers are some of thousands in Hollywood that have been striking since May 2 for a fair contract.

Michele Loud, one of the show’s writers, told Variety on May 6, “There is no ‘Jeopardy!’ without writers. Without us, it’s just an empty blue screen.”

While plenty of films and TV shows have been impacted by the writers strike, it looks as though ‘Jeopardy!’ may be the first game show to be affected.

This comes after host Mayim Bialik decided she won’t host the final week of filming for Season 39, showing solidarity with the Writers Guild of America as per Deadline.

However, production for the final few episodes of the season are moving forward as Ken Jennings will take over the remainder of Bialik’s filming.

The show is a WGA show and features contributions from WGA writers, though the questions for the season were written in advance.

The final episodes of the season will be filmed at the Sony Pictures lot in Culver City from Tuesday, May 16 to Friday, May 19.
