Ballston Spa softball team hosts Grand Slam tournament to support mental health – The Daily Gazette

The Ballston Spa softball team hopes that this weekend’s installment of its annual Grand Slam Tournament will bring awareness to another worthy cause.

The Grand Slam event has been dedicated to the fight against ALS since 2016. This year, the event will be dedicated to suicide awareness and menthal health support.

“One of our players, her father suffered from ALS and we wanted to support her and that cause,” Ballston Spa softball coach Amanda Fifield said. “Then, a family within our program was impacted by the the loss of someone due to suicide. We want to make a donation in their honor, and promote the awareness that there’s help out there for you.”

Boston Baijiu Bar Pop-Up Hosts Regular Tastings at Somerville’s Backbar

Any regular at Backbar in Somerville’s Union Square has probably noticed a tiny closet while waiting in line to get in. This former storage space has gone through a makeover: Featuring a proper bar counter, a wall full of whimsical-looking bottles, vintage Kung Fu movie posters illuminated by string lights, and traditional Chinese tchotchkes, this closet has become Greater Boston’s first dedicated baijiu (pronounced “bye-Joe”) bar, hosting tastings every Thursday night.

Waltham Group hosts volunteer recruitment night

Waltham Group hosted its recruitment night on Thursday, Jan. 27. The event was held both in-person in the Sherman Function Hall and virtually on Zoom, where coordinators from each of the Waltham Group programs explained their volunteer opportunities.

Waltham Group is an umbrella organization to 20 different student-led volunteer programs, which fall under the categories of “Health and Human Services,” “Mentoring and Tutoring,” “Housing, Environment, and Advocacy,” and “After School Programs.”

During the recruitment event on Zoom, students had the opportunity to join breakout rooms based on each category of community service where coordinators presented information on their programs and answered questions.
