On Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 1- 6 p.m., in honor of Police Week 2024, the Niagara Regional Police Service will host an Open House at the Pen Centre, located at 221 Glendale Avenue, in the City of St. Catharines.

During the event, members of the public will have the opportunity to observe and interact with various police vehicles and equipment as well as interact with officers from both the uniform front line and detectives within specialty units such as K9, Marine, Forensic Services, Recruiting, Cyber Crime and Traffic Enforcement.

Alexa House Mission Center dedicated to lost members of the community, will host families experiencing homelessness

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Renovations at a local mission center are complete. On Saturday, it was dedicated to three local individuals who passed away.

The Alexa House Mission Center is a safe space for people in the Family Promise program.

It honors the lifes of Alexa Cannon, Daniel Yardley and Rita Magnus. The three lost their lives under tragic circumstances, but now the memories house hope for those facing homelessness.

“It made sense to me that this would be something that might aid in honoring [Alexa’s] memory,” said Cathy Cannon, Alexa Cannon’s mother.

The house is named in honor of Alexa. The house is covered in blue, her favorite color, and decorated with her favorite quotes and pictures she took .

Photos: WGLT and The Vidette host open house for new shared space

The Illinois State University campus and Bloomington-Normal community came together May 1 to celebrate the opening of the new shared home of WGLT and The Vidette.

WGLT staff provided tours of the new building at 500 W. Locust St. in Normal, including inside the five new studios. Executive Director R.C. McBride and ISU President Aondover Tarhule gave remarks before a ribbon-cutting with the McLean County Chamber of Commerce.

The move caps a multiyear fundraising campaign to build new studios paired with generous support from ISU to update The Vidette building. The deeper partnership between WGLT and The Vidette is already paying dividends, including the launch this spring of the Democracy’s Future podcast tied to the election.

Video shows Islamic prayer call in Lancaster House, not Buckingham Palace

A video is being shared on social media with false claims it shows the Islamic call to prayer being performed at Buckingham Palace. But it was actually filmed at Lancaster House, which is a government building, and is more than a year old. 

In the footage, a man standing at a podium is performing the call to prayer, known as the Adhan, in a grand building and a crowd is gathered to watch. 

It has been shared on social media with captions including “We’re watching the complete collapse of a once great empire. The Islamic call to prayer inside of Buckingham Palace is just the latest example of its defeat”, and “Muslim call to prayer inside Buckingham Palace? WTH”. 

But the footage actually shows a scene in Lancaster House, which is situated near Buckingham…

Former White House CIO warns the tech industry should prepare for a TikTok ban

A hot potato: Could the TikTok bill, which would force owner ByteDance to sell the app or face a block from US app stores and web hosting platforms, become law? Former White House Chief Information Officer (CIO) Theresa Payton warns that US tech firms should prepare for the worst as ByteDance may not willingly divest its wildly popular app.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act was passed by Congress last month. If it comes into effect, Chinese owner ByteDance will be forced to divest TikTok within about 180 days; otherwise, the app will be blocked in the US. That could involve ISPs blocking traffic to TikTok, social networks might be forced to stop videos from the app being shared, and app stores will have to put TikTok on the banned…
