Unevidenced claim Labour leader called for ‘more houses’ for asylum seekers recirculates on Facebook

A post claiming Sir Keir Starmer called for “‘more houses to be built’ for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants”, and described “migrants” as “the future of our economy” has been recirculating on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

The post, which was first shared on X more than a year ago reads: “Keir Starmer calls for ‘more houses to be built’ for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants – ‘These migrants have to be the priority for the government. They are the future of our economy’ he said”.

The original post includes a link to an interview Mr Starmer gave to BBC News in November 2022. But as we’ve previously explained, Mr Starmer did not say this during the interview, and we’ve found no evidence that he’s called for “more houses to…

Okanagan College hosting several open houses

Okanagan College (OC) is hosting a series of open houses across the region.

The college will be open to anyone interested in programs and courses.

“Events like these are an excellent way to explore and experience OC first-hand, to get your questions answered, and to learn about programs, pathways, and supports available to students,” said Dr. Samantha Lenci, OC Provost and Vice President, Academic.

Applications for the 2024/2025 academic year are now open, and students looking to start sooner can also explore several courses and programs that begin this year.

Open House attendees can apply on the spot and have the application fee waived at the event. Potential students can also learn more and apply on the OC website.

Cumberland College hosting open houses for potential students

The Tisdale campus open house is on April 4, Nipawin on April 5 and Melfort on April 6 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

NORTHEAST – Cumberland College will be hosting three open houses in Nipawin, Melfort and Tisdale, providing an opportunity for future students to see what the college has to offer.

Selene Weisberg, recruitment and development co-ordinator for the Cumberland College said that this will be the first open house since start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020

Weisberg said each campus is promoting the programs that take place at their particular campus, but are happy to share information about any of the Cumberland College programs that attendees want to learn more about.

The open houses will from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each evening at each campus.

As Facebook, Twitter remove far-right users, “alt-tech” houses exiled netizens

When sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube ban users for violating their terms of service, those individuals often don’t leave social media altogether. Instead, many of these digital deportees flock to alternative sites to meet their online social demands.

Known broadly as “alt-tech,” sites like Gab, Parler and Rumble are best known as harbors for far-right netizens, providing more lax content moderation than their mainstream counterparts. To supporters of these sites, the platforms are seen as bastions of free speech in an online environment dominated by a handful of suppressive corporations. To critics, they willingly house bigotry, antisemitism and white supremacy — with Gab’s founder even openly expressing such views online.
