Wellesley shows stick-to-itiveness at strategic housing plan kickoff

More than 100 people attended a June 18 kickoff event for Wellesley’s strategic housing plan, a Town Meeting-approved effort to address the need for more housing options in town. (See Wellesley Media recording.)

The plan would succeed Wellesley’s housing production plan, released in 2018 to help the town achieve a 10% threshold of affordable housing stock that would fend off unfriendly 40B projects.

The strategic plan is being crafted against a backdrop of increased urgency across the town and state to address housing needs, as illustrated by the emergence of the MBTA Communities Plan and other efforts. Wellesley is well along toward meeting its MBTA Communities Plan requirements, and has also made updates to its inclusionary zoning bylaw and taken steps to encourage building of…

Got a Spare Bedroom? Maplewood Announces Shared Housing Program

In an effort to increase affordable housing options in an unaffordable market — particularly for senior citizens on fixed incomes — the Township of Maplewood is partnering with HomeSharing, Inc. to promote shared housing.

Maplewood is hosting an informational meeting in person at Maplewood Town Hall (574 Valley Street) and virtually on Zoom (see login information below) at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

“The home sharing idea came to me from Amy Stuart, Maplewood Coordinator of Two Towns for All Ages, and Joan Crystal, a member of Maplewood’s Senior Advisory Committee,” said Township Committee member Victor De Luca. “I brought it to the Affordable Housing Board, which saw it as a tool in our efforts to increase affordable housing opportunities. The Housing Board…

Families host students as housing prices bite

At the far end of the kitchen in a detached family home in the south of Luxembourg, Agnès Kralj is busy clearing the breakfast table.

“Come in and meet Marianna,” she says, pointing to the 28-year-old PhD student from Brazil.

One could call Kralj and Marianna housemates. At least, they live together, sit for breakfast together and message each other to say if they are going to be home late. Yet, they are generations apart.

Kralj is hosting Marianna and another University of Luxembourg student, Alexandra, as part of a project which launched at the start of this academic year. WeConnect was created to help students find affordable housing by placing them with host families. Students pay around €425 per month including insurance cover – significantly less than accommodation on the…

Harvard students’ site helping Ukraine refugees find housing

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — Two Harvard University freshmen have launched a website designed to connect people fleeing Ukraine to those in safer countries willing to take them in — and it’s generating offers of help and housing worldwide.

Moved by the plight of Ukrainian refugees desperate to escape Russian bombardment across the former Soviet republic, Marco Burstein, 18, of Los Angeles, and Avi Schiffmann, 19, of Seattle, used their coding skills to create UkraineTakeShelter.com over three frenzied days in early March.

Since then, more than 18,000 prospective hosts have signed up on the site to offer assistance to refugees seeking matches with hosts in their preferred or convenient locations. On a recent day, Burstein and Schiffmann logged 800,000 users.

“We’ve heard all sorts of…
