The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) chief executive, Geoff Allardice, has reaffirmed that there are currently no plans to move the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 from Pakistan, which is set to begin in February-March 2025.

In preparation for hosting a big tournament, extensive construction is underway at key stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. High-profile matches will be hosted at these venues as they are being refurbished to meet international standards.

Nonetheless, there have been a lot of rumours that the competition will be moved outside of Pakistan. This may occur as a result of the Indian team’s decision to skip the competition in Pakistan due to safety concerns and political unrest between the two nations.

The ICC has approved a budget of approximately USD 70 million for holding the Champions Trophy in Pakistan early next year. A source close to the ICC said on Thursday that the world body’s financial and commercial committee, which is headed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah had scrutinised and approved the budget which was prepared and jointly submitted by the Pakistan Cricket Board and ICC finance department.

“The approximate budget is around USD 70 million and only USD 4.5 million has been allocated as additional expenses,” the source said.

The approval of the total budget and additional expenses at the last ICC meeting has generated speculations that the back up funds have been kept in case India refuses to send its team to Pakistan and some matches have to be played at other venues.

That vast stadium, named after the Indian prime minister, will host most of the headline clashes in the tournament. With an election due in April and concerns about a number of Modi’s policies, particularly his treatment of Muslim minorities, there are many who believe the tournament will be used as a political tool to prop up his premiership.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, hosts India, defending champions England, and most prolific winners Australia are the top three favourites, with Pakistan and South Africa the pick of the outsiders.

For the hosts, it has often been hard to look past Virat Kohli, long the team’s biggest star. But fellow batter Shubman Gill is ahead of his compatriot in the ratings and comes in to the tournament in better form.
