The British Medical Association (BMA) is incorrect to suggest there are 6.4 million more GP patients registered in England than there were in 2019.

In a letter to the new health secretary Wes Streeting, shared on X (formerly Twitter) and viewed over 28,000 times, the chair of the BMA’s GP committee Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer said that patient numbers had “increased by 6.4 million in the past 5 years alone”.

But this isn’t right, and the patient register has only grown by about half that.

Professional bodies should take care to avoid errors in statistics they use, and quickly rectify any mistakes when they occur.

World Refugee Day 2024 – UNHCR

CAIRO – 20 June 2024: Egypt observed World Refugee Day, an annual United Nations event honoring refugees worldwide, and called for intensified global efforts to alleviate pressures on countries hosting them.

In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Egypt currently hosts refugees and asylum seekers from 62 different nationalities.

A post shared on Facebook claimed that Conservative party MPs received a “£2,400+” pay rise during the week of 19 September, and that meant MPs’ pay has increased by 42% since 2010. 

The post was a screenshot of a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Howard Beckett, a former Assistant General Secretary of the trade union Unite. The post, which has over 5,000 shares, said “Tory MPs got a £2,400+ pay rise this week. A 42% payrise since 2010.”

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the United Kingdom’s chief financial watchdog, has issued a warning about the increased risk of fraud associated with the growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, in financial services.
