Moses Lake hosting community meetings on district financial woes

The basics behind the school district’s finances will be shared along with details about what happened causing the budget error.

MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Community members in Moses Lake will meet Tuesday night to discuss the school district’s financial situation. The meeting will be the first of four in-person community meetings this month.

The school district was forced to lay off dozens of staff positions before the start of the school year after discovering an $11 million accounting error.

Community members are invited to ask questions and speak with the interim superintendent at Tuesday’s meeting.

The Christian Women’s Connection of Lake County announced that a “Ladies Luncheon and Fall Fashion Show” will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at Pine Ridge Country Club, 30601 Ridge Road in Wickliffe.

The event will feature Carriage Trade Boutique on Chardon Square and owner Mariann Goodwin, and Stonecroft Speaker Shirley Davidson, according to a news release.

Unlike so many other past hosts that have decided bringing back the Games isn’t worth the time, money or hassle, Salt Lake City remains one of the few places where Olympic fever still burns strong. Olympic officials praised the city for preserving facilities and public enthusiasm as they kicked off their final visit ahead of a formal announcement expected this July.

Footage of dead birds on a frozen lake is from South Dakota, not China

Multiple posts on social media falsely claim a video shows hundreds of birds that were supposedly killed by severe temperatures of -52°C in Xinjiang, China. 

In fact, the footage comes from South Dakota in the US. 

The video seemingly shows hundreds of dead birds frozen to the surface of an expanse of water. 

It has been shared on both X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook with the caption: “Today, temperatures in Xinjiang, China dropped 45° [sic] almost instantly to a low of -52℃ (-61.6℉), kiIIing hundreds of waterfowl. Will they blame this on global warming?” 

While temperatures in Xinjiang, in the north west of China, were reported to have reached -52°C in recent days, the video does not show scenes from this region.
