US targeting TikTok a “black box’ bid to illegally seize the assets of a foreign company

Last month, United States President Joe Biden signed into law the so-called 21st Century Peace through Strength Act, which prohibits entities in the US from distributing, updating or maintaining a website or application operated by ByteDance, effectively banning the popular short-video sharing platform TikTok in the US unless it is sold.

The TikTok legislation underscores the US’ attempt to maintain its hegemony in the digital realm. That the legislation was fast-tracked through Congress suggests it was a political campaign launched by the US to impede the development of other countries.

TikTok Urges Users To Contact Congress To Oppose New Bill That Forces ByteDance Divestment; “Intimidation Tactics,” Says Key Sponsor Of Legislation

TikTok users have reported getting push notifications urging them to contact their members of Congress to protest newly proposed legislation that would require that parent Chinese-owned ByteDance divest the app.

The notification warns users to “Stop a TikTok shutdown,” warning that Congress “is planning a total ban of TikTok.” It features a link where they can enter their ZIP code and then call their member of Congress, according to lawmakers.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee is expected to vote this afternoon on legislation that would would prevent app stores or web hosting services from TikTok applications unless it severs ties to ByteDance.
