At the European Parliament in Brussels, the photo exhibition dedicated to Giorgio La Pira

Brussels – The European Parliament, for the first time, is hosting in its Brussels headquarters an exhibition on Giorgio La Pira: 19 photographic panels set up near the staircase leading to the plenary chamber tell the story of the “Holy Mayor.”
“In this period of disappointment and disenchantment with the quality of public policy and its protagonists, the figure of Giorgio La Pira stands out as an extraordinary and necessary example,” says Beatrice Covassi, Florentine MEP for the PD, who hosted the event. “With this exhibition, we want to resonate a very topical message, reviving the theme of peace and inter-religious dialogue. Old video of fight in Ukrainian parliament re-emerges on social media

A video shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) showing a fight in the Ukrainian parliament, alongside a hashtag referencing Ukraine’s war with Russia, was actually filmed in 2010.

The footage was also posted on Facebook alongside a caption which says: “Ukrainian Parliament. That money is sure working. Protecting democracy one cheque at a time lol”.

While this appears to refer to financial aid sent to Ukraine by various countries following Russia’s invasion of the country in February 2022, the video was filmed more than a decade ago.

The footage actually shows a fight that broke out in Ukraine’s parliament on 27 April 2010, reportedly over a vote to allow Russia to continue using a naval port in Crimea.

This is completely inaccurate. As we have written before, catering services on the parliamentary estate are effectively subsidised by the taxpayers at a cost of millions of pounds each year. However, the yearly total is significantly lower than £17 million and catering services are offered to thousands of people working there—not just MPs.

False or misleading claims about politicians have the potential to affect people’s opinions of individuals, parties or…
