Jeopardy! has reportedly made a decision about who will be behind the lectern next season — and it’s not what many were expecting to hear.

On July 25, multiple outlets reported that Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings and Big Bang Theory actress Mayim Bialik will “continue sharing hosting duties” for the quiz show’s upcoming season 39. As viewers know, the search for a new Jeopardy! permanent host has been ongoing since Alex Trebek’s death in November 2020. After a roster of celebrity guest hosts tried out for the position, former Jeopardy! executive producer Mike Richards was named the next permanent host in August 2021. But he stepped down only a few days later following reports about past offensive and derogatory comments.

If you thought (like I did) that we were finished with Jeopardy host shenanigans, then you (and I) were mistaken. Mayim Bialik had one week left of filming Jeopardy’s 39th season when the writers strike began in May. Since Jeopardy had WGA members, Mayim decided to show solidarity and did not film that final week. Ken Jennings, her alternating co-host, stepped in to finish Season 39. Some argued that it was not a direct scab since the material had been written before the strike was called. Mayim hasn’t been back to host since. So this weekend’s official announcement feels like late confirmation of what’s already been in effect for half a year: Mayim Bialik will not be back, Ken Jennings will handle all hosting duties on his own.

Jeopardy! is making a major change. Mayim Bialik will no longer host the quiz show, the The Big Bang Theory alum shared the news on her Instagram Friday.

It was just last summer that Bialik was named the long-running game show’s permanent co-host, opposite Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings. In her new post, Bialik wrote that she was informed by studio Sony that she would “no longer be hosting the syndicated version” of the show. She did not give a reason for her exit.
