Picture doesn’t show Australian Navy ramming ‘illegal immigrant’ boat

Hundreds of people have shared Facebook posts falsely claiming to show two Australian Navy ships ramming “a boat loaded with illegal immigrants that did not respond to requests to stop”.

The posts, which have also been shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), add: “The illegal immigrants were all returned, the crew members arrested and the boat scrapped.”

They also say “that’s the way you do it!”—implying that similar tactics should be used in the UK.

But this picture doesn’t show ships from the Australian Navy or a boat carrying migrants. As we have written before, when the same false claim went viral in 2020, the picture was taken in 2012 and actually shows a flare-up in tensions between China and Japan over a small group of islands in the East…

Hoax missing boy post uses picture of animal rescue volunteer in Philippines

Posts claiming that a photograph shows a five-year-old boy who has gone missing after leaving home on his bike have been shared in Facebook groups. But these appeals for information are hoaxes.

Full Fact has seen examples of these posts in community buy and sell groups in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, and Lethbridge, Canada.

The posts both use exactly the same text which says: “Help!!! MISSING Child!! #Gawler

We have written before about posts shared thousands of times on Facebook which used almost…

Picture of Emmanuel Macron in front of fire is AI-generated

A picture circulating on social media appears to show French President Emmanuel Macron sitting on a chair in the middle of the street, a pile of rubbish burning behind him.

This isn’t a real photo—it appears to have been created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Full Fact was unable to find any evidence the president sat for such a picture, and it bears a resemblance to other AI images that have been shared online amid the recent riots in France.

We have found versions of the images shared online since as early as March.

There has been widespread unrest in the country since 27 June, when a police officer shot and killed a 17-year-old named Nahel M in a Paris suburb during a traffic stop.

We have not been able to find the original version of the AI…

Picture of refugee banner wasn’t taken in France

An image widely-shared on Facebook contrasts what it claims is a photo of a pro-refugee banner at a protest in France in 2016 with a picture of recent riots in the country.

The images have also been shared many thousands of times on Twitter

The first picture, captioned “France in 2016” shows a group of young people apparently at a march, holding a large banner which reads: “They are not dangerous, they are in danger! #refugeeswelcome”.

But this picture wasn’t taken in France at all. It is actually from a large demonstration that took place in Brussels, Belgium, in 2015

The second picture, captioned “France in 2023”, shows the silhouettes of what appear to be a number of emergency service workers in front of several burning vehicles.

This is…
