EU recommendation on piracy of live events disgruntles rightsholders – EURACTIV.com

The European Commission’s recommendation to fight online piracy of live events focuses on the effective handling of take-down requests, dynamic injunctions, and voluntary cooperation. Still, rightsholders have found its relaxed revision time disappointing.

The Commission is due to present its recommendation on the piracy of live content on 3 May. The non-binding initiative is meant to push member states, national authorities and intermediary services to take effective and proportionate measures to combat the unauthorised retransmission of live events.

However, according to an early draft obtained by EURACTIV, the recommendation is set to fall short of the expectations of rightsholders, like TV channels, who have acquired the rights to transmit a football championship…

ISPs to Block Piracy Websites As Part of Far-Reaching Default Ruling

In a ruling that could prove significant for the music industry, a federal court has officially ordered internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to multiple television- and film-piracy websites.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla just recently rendered the corresponding judgement in a trio of orders, specifically calling on “all” ISPs – 96 of which, Verizon, AT&T, Spectrum, and Cox Communications among them, are listed in the filing – to blacklist israeli-tv.com, sdarot.com, and israel.tv.

Plaintiffs including United King Film Distribution and Keshet Broadcasting, “movie, television, sports and news content producers and providers in Israel,” served the defendant piracy websites with an amended complaint back in late January, according…

Hosting firm snags major court victory in content piracy case

A federal court in Florida has found web hosting company Quadranet not liable for piracy activities that VPN users carry out on its platform. 

After a court dismissed an earlier complaint with prejudice last year, a group of movie producers filed a motion against Quadranet and LiquidVPN over alleged copyright infringement.

As reported by TorrentFreak, earlier this year a group of independent film companies behind a number of popular films including “London has Fallen”, “Outpost” and “Dallas Buyers Club” not only began targeting site operators and individual pirates but they also started going after VPN providers.
