Claims that “police say” you can smash a window to rescue a dog from a hot car after taking a photograph and waiting five minutes have been shared almost 180,000 times on Facebook

The posts, which encourage others to copy and paste the content in order to share it more widely, say: “Police say if you see a dog locked in a car in case of high heat, take a picture of the dog and the car, call the police, wait 5 minutes and break the car window.

Wrong man pictured in social media posts about Met Police shooting of two dogs

A number of posts on Facebook wrongly claim to have identified a Metropolitan Police officer who attended an incident in London on 7 May where two dogs were shot dead by police. These posts have been shared thousands of times

Full Fact has also spoken to the wrongly-identified man, who told us that he has never worked for the police force, lives in Nottingham…

DeSoto police, Dallas County DA hosting event Saturday to collect unwanted guns, ammo

In an effort to stymie gun-related crimes, DeSoto police said they are teaming up with the Dallas County district attorney’s office and DeSoto city officials on Saturday to collect unwanted firearms and ammunition.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., people can trade firearms and ammo for Walmart gift cards at DeSoto Fire Station No. 2, 206 S. Parks Drive, police said.

“This program is dedicated to ensuring safety within our communities by providing a safe place for citizens to surrender their unwanted firearms and ammunition,” police said in a post shared on the department’s Facebook page.

Police said they will not ask for identification from people who turn in firearms. They asked that…
