In the early hours of Monday morning, Managed.com – a major provider of managed web hosting solutions – discovered it was the victim of a co-ordinated ransomware attack, encrypting not only its own systems but also the websites of customers.

Within hours the company had decided to take down its entire infrastructure. That has the advantage of meaning that no more damage can be done by the ransomware against the websites and databases of customers, but has the colossal drawback of meaning that those same websites are no longer accessible.

As you can probably imagine, customers – some of whom seem not to be aware that their web hosting provider has suffered a severe ransomware attack – are less than happy to find their websites are no longer online.

Ransomware attack takes web hosting provider Managed.com servers offline

One of the internet’s biggest web hosting providers has been forced to shut down all of its servers after suffering a ransomware attack. 

Managed.com, which provides CMS-optimized platforms for small businesses and enterprise-level clients, initially only took down a small number of customer sites on November 16 when the attack first become apparent. Hours later, however, it was forced to close down its entire web hosting infrastructure.

It has been reported that Managed.com, one of the biggest providers of managed web hosting solutions, has taken down all its servers in order to deal with a ransomware attack. The ransomware impacted the company’s public-facing web hosting systems resulting in some of the customer sites having their data encrypted.The company is now working with law enforcement to identify the attackers and also working on to restore their customers’ data which were lost as part of this attack. This included WordPress and DotNetNuke managed hosting solutions, email servers, DNS servers, RDP access points, FTP servers, and online databases.

The attack took place on Monday, November 16, and the ransomware impacted the company’s public-facing web hosting systems, resulting in some customer sites having their data encrypted.

Managed.com said the incident only impacted a limited number of customer sites, which the company said it immediately took offline.
