Claim about three-year-old girl found wandering recirculates – Full Fact

Since we first wrote about it earlier this month, we’ve seen another example shared on Facebook of a hoax post claiming a three-year-old girl was found wandering and taken to a local police station.

The post features an image of a young girl who seems to be asleep, and who has a scar-like mark on her face.

The text of the post says: “This 3 year old baby girl, Mila, was found last night walking behind a home here in #derby.

“Deputy Sara Thomas saved her and took her to the Police Station but no one has an idea where she lives, the neighbours don’t know her or how she got there. She says her mom’s name is Abigail”.

The post then includes an appeal for people to “flood our feeds so that this post may reach her family”.

Fake Wetherspoons free ‘meal for two’ deal recirculates on Facebook – Full Fact

A Facebook account using the name “Wetherspoons” has shared a post claiming that the pub chain is offering free meals to people who share and comment.

The post has been shared more than 24,000 times at the time of writing, but it is not real. It copies similar posts from other Facebook accounts appearing to impersonate the brand which we’ve fact checked previously.

The post says: “Hello everyone! I’m Tim Martin, founder of Wetherspoons. I’m very pleased to introduce you to my son Ryan Martin. Next week I will be retiring and handing over all control to my eldest Son. Before I depart I’d like to do one last good deed to say thanks because without all of you we wouldn’t be here today. So everyone who shares&comments within the next 7 days will receive a…

Edited image of Sir Keir Starmer sitting with Jimmy Savile recirculates online

An altered image that appears to show Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer sitting next to Jimmy Savile is circulating again on Facebook in the run up to the general election.

The photo shows Mr Starmer sitting on a chair beside serial sex abuser Jimmy Savile. Shadow international development secretary Lisa Nandy is also visible.

However, as we have reported before, the image has been edited to include Savile’s face.

The original photo was posted by shadow chancellor, Rachel Reeves in December 2022 and shows a group of people—including Ms Reeves, Ms Nandy and the Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin watching an England football World Cup match.

It shows Mr Starmer sitting alongside former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. In the altered image shared on Facebook, Mr…

Unevidenced claim Labour leader called for ‘more houses’ for asylum seekers recirculates on Facebook

A post claiming Sir Keir Starmer called for “‘more houses to be built’ for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants”, and described “migrants” as “the future of our economy” has been recirculating on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).

The post, which was first shared on X more than a year ago reads: “Keir Starmer calls for ‘more houses to be built’ for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants – ‘These migrants have to be the priority for the government. They are the future of our economy’ he said”.

The original post includes a link to an interview Mr Starmer gave to BBC News in November 2022. But as we’ve previously explained, Mr Starmer did not say this during the interview, and we’ve found no evidence that he’s called for “more houses to…

Unevidenced Diane Abbott quote about ‘the problem with Britain’ recirculates online

Multiple images and posts have recently been shared on Facebook and X that claim the politician Diane Abbott MP said: “The problem in Britain is not immigration, the problem in Britain is white people”. Others feature an image of the politician with the quote “the problem is white people” imposed across her.

However, as we’ve written before, there’s no evidence Ms Abbott ever said this.

This claim has been circulating online for at least a decade.

Ms Abbott has also denied she’s said this. In 2022, she told Reuters she had “no record or recollection of ever saying this.”

She said: “It is not something I would ever intentionally say because it is not something I agree with.”

Searching on Google for this exact quote also yields no evidence of…
