Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday addressed the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) via video conference from Beijing.

The following is the full text of the address:

Your Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi,

Distinguished Colleagues,

I wish to thank India for hosting the meeting of the Council of Heads of State as the current president of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

At this meeting, we are going to welcome Iran as a full member and sign the memorandum of obligations on the membership of Belarus. This will manifest the vitality of our SCO family. I offer my congratulations to the two countries.

India to host virtual SCO summit with Putin and Lukashenko in attendance

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko will be attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit that India will be hosting virtually next week. The summit on 4th July will be chaired by Indian PM Narendra Modi with a focus on “Secure” theme, an acronym that stands for ‘Security, Economy and Trade, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity, and Environment’.

India for the first time since becoming a full member of the grouping in 2017, is chairing the grouping. However, the nation has been hosting several key meetings of the grouping, including the defence and foreign ministers’ meeting earlier this year.
