Most people believe the work should be left to professionals or people who know their job the best. Their judgment shouldn’t be second-guessed on most accounts. But sometimes, a person might fail to understand the consequences of their actions even if the former explains it to them. A photo showing the Kremlin without any lights on is being shared on social media alongside claims Moscow faces a severe electricity shortage due to Western sanctions. 

One post sharing the photo says: “BREAKING Russia: Moscow remains dark due to severe electricity shortage The reason is reported to be in difficulties at servicing foreign turbines at Russian thermal power plants due to Western sanctions [sic]”. Other posts have almost identical text. 

But the photo does not show a recent electricity shortage—it was shared in a 2014 article about ‘Earth Hour’, the annual WWF event that encourages people to turn off non-essential lights—such as those on famous landmarks—to raise awareness for climate change. A video is being shared widely on social media with a false claim it shows genuine coverage of Paris Olympic events being censored on Iranian broadcasts.

In the footage being shared, women are shown competing in events, including high jump, hurdles, and diving, with parts of their body obscured by superimposed black rectangles and stars.

But the clip, which has been circulating on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), with the caption: “this is how Iran broadcasts the Olympics”, is not a genuine Iranian broadcast of the Olympics.

It comes from a 2013 satirical video, which can be seen on the YouTube channel of a Farsi-language satire show OnTen.
