Forbes magazine covers showing Hamas leaders are fake

Multiple posts are sharing false images of what appear to be front covers of Forbes magazine featuring Hamas leaders.

One image shows former Hamas leader, Khaled Meshaal, while another shows current Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh. The word “Forbes” is overlaid on top of the photos and other text is also formatted in the style of a magazine cover.

Each image has been shared on multiple social media platforms including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram

These posts appear to have been first shared by the official X account for the State of Israel where the post featuring the image of Mr Meshaal has more than 13,000 shares and the post featuring Mr Haniyeh also has over 5,000. The account commented on both these posts stating that the images are…

Video supposedly showing ‘new air assault’ on Israel actually dates from 2021

A video being shared on social media falsely claims to show a “new air assault” on Israel.

The video, which shows rockets fired into the sky near tall buildings, has been shared on both Facebook and Twitter with captions featuring the word “BREAKING” and claims that “Hamas militants” have started “a new air assault” on Israel.

However, the video does not show events in Israel and the Gaza Strip in recent days. It instead dates from May 2021, which saw a separate period of violence between Israel and Hamas.

The video was shared on Facebook as early as 15 May 2021 and specifies the location to be the Israeli city of Ashdod. The clip is included in a compilation video that was posted to YouTube with the caption: “Iron dome in action 11 of may 2021…

The video, which has been viewed more than 5.8 million times on TikTok, features text which reads: “NATO soldiers now in Ukraine.”

Full Fact has found a longer version of the video posted on Facebook on 18 August 2021, captioned: “More scenes #Kabul Airport in…

Video supposedly showing protests against Imran Khan’s arrest was filmed in 2022

Following the arrest of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan on 9 May a number of Facebook and Twitter posts claimed a video showed people protesting his arrest outside the London home of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

One of the Facebook posts, shared on 11 May, was captioned: “A large number of Pakistanis are protesting Imran Khan’s arrest in front of Nawaz Sharif’s house in London”.

While the video does show people demonstrating outside a building reported to be owned by Mr Sharif, it was not filmed following Mr Khan’s recent arrest.

The video instead appears to have been originally shared on 17 April 2022, and shows people protesting in London a week after Mr Khan was ousted as Prime Minister following a parliamentary vote of…
