Old photo shows an explosion on a German warship near Norway not Yemen

A photo showing flames and smoke coming from a ship has been shared on social media with the caption “German warship retreats from Yemen after unsuccessful mission.”

But this is an old photo and does not show a ship anywhere near Yemen.

The picture is actually a screenshot from a video of an explosion on a German warship caused by a misfired missile during a training exercise off the coast of Norway in 2018. Two German sailors reportedly suffered minor injuries and an image of the aftermath shared by the German navy showed part of the damage done to the ship.

A German warship did reportedly leave the Red Sea (which is off the coast of Yemen) in April 2024, after it was deployed there in February as part of an EU mission to protect ships from attacks by Houthi…

A video is being shared on social media with false claims it shows the Islamic call to prayer being performed at Buckingham Palace. But it was actually filmed at Lancaster House, which is a government building, and is more than a year old.

It has been shared on social media with captions including “We’re watching the complete collapse of a once great empire. The Islamic call to prayer inside of Buckingham Palace is just the latest example of its defeat”, and “Muslim call to prayer inside Buckingham Palace? WTH”.

Image shows Beirut, not explosion at Ukraine security service headquarters

A picture is being shared widely online with false claims it shows plumes of smoke emanating from the headquarters of Ukraine’s security service in Kyiv after a missile attack by Russia.

A Facebook post sharing an image claiming to be of the headquarters says: “Breaking news: What hit the security headquarters of the SBU in Kiev?! All the important officers were inside‼”

However, this is not what the photograph circulating on Facebook and X (formerly known as Twitter), depicts.

The image is actually a screenshot from a video showing a section of the evacuated port silos in Beirut, Lebanon, collapsing in August 2022 after a fire broke out on the site in July.

This followed a huge explosion in the port in August 2020, involving thousands of tonnes of stored…
