Local News: Humane Society receives $1500 in donation following donation drive hosted by two dedicated volunteers (8/5/24)

Two avid supporters of the Dyersburg – Dyer County Humane Society collected an overwhelming volume of donations for the Shelter totaling $1500.
Shea Childress and Ben Cross started the Shelter Drive as a way for friends, family, and fellow animal enthusiasts to lend a hand. The event was hosted in honor of Shea’s 25th birthday.
Shea and Ben have been instrumental volunteers in the growth of the Shelter, hosting numerous annual events, including Volunteer Day. Items collected included 265 heavy-duty trash bags, 550 13-gallon trash bags, 486 lbs. of dogfood, 20 lbs. of dog treats, 48 rolls of paper towels, 5,700 nitrile exam gloves, roughly 8 gallons of laundry detergent, 770 disinfectant wipes, and over 5 gallons of bleach. American Cancer Society hosts community event dedicated to fighting cancer in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR)– The American Cancer Society hosted the ‘Relay for Life of Greater Lynchburg,’ a community event dedicated to fighting cancer and supporting those affected by it on Friday, June 21.

The event provided an opportunity for the community to come together, show support, and contribute to the American Cancer Society’s mission of funding research for all types of cancer. It featured local food trucks, music, and activities for kids, making it a fun and meaningful event for the whole family.

Dublin will host a society dedicated to Irish novelist George Russell

The United Arts Club, located on Upper Fitzwilliam Street, is the venue for the event. The poet, writer, artist, and philosopher assisted in founding the club in 1907.

AE Russell, as he was also called, was a highly esteemed and renowned figure worldwide, and was considered a giant of Irish public life.

Despite spending the majority of his life in Dublin, he was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, in 1867.

When he passed away in England in 1935, Taoiseach Eamon De Valera and WB Yeats led his funeral procession, and he was given special treatment with an aerial flypast as his coffin was transported back to Ireland via Dún Laoghaire.

A bust of Russell may be found in Dublin’s Merrion Square, and a perfect duplicate can be found in the former Lurgan Town Hall.
