I’m a big fan of the Samsung SSD’s as well, after having extensively used the Intel entry level SSD’s (5xx series) for specific clients around a decade ago, and having experienced a perpetually worsening failure rates as model #’s climbed. We pivoted to the Samsung 860 Pro’s at the time, and had very positive experiences.

That said, I’d be very careful about using the current generation of Samsung EVO’s: We have a customer who deploys considerable numbers of these drives, and has done so for awhile. I’ve observed on several occasions said customer having to replace the SSD’s in bulk (by which I mean, dozens per visit) after…

Need some advice on dedicated servers SSD NVMe vs HDD SAS – Web Hosting Talk

For the static files.

1 Tb = 10^12 bytes.

If your files have 10^4 bytes on average, then
your site hits the storage ~ 10^8 times per month.

The ordinary mechanical HDD can serve
this load, if it will be distributed steadily.

Yet better, if the files, which are
requested frequently, are cached.

The problem is, that the load may
have the sharp peaks, during which the
mechanical HDD may be too slow.

If your files are not static,
but are generated on the fly,
especially with many requests
to the storage for every file
(like the pages from the content
management systems), then,
most probably, the mechanical
HDD will not be able to serve
your load during the peaks.

sata ssd raid 10, software vs raid card ?

a raid card with bbu or cachevault will be a little bit faster because write requests are committed to raid card memory even before the SSD has finished writing the data.

mdadm raid 10 for 8x sata ssds should provide adequate performance, but if the raid card is not expensive it is worthwhile to get a bit more performance.

If possible, a pair of 8tb nvme in sw raid 1, or 4x 4tb nvme in sw raid 10, would be even better.
