Ukraine Strikes Russian Airfields Hosting Hypersonic Missile Carriers

Ukraine has launched drone attacks on three military airfields in Russia, one of which hosts aircraft that can carry hypersonic missiles, it has been reported.

As Ukraine carries on with its incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, Kyiv is continuing with drone attacks within Russia, often targeting military and infrastructure sites in strikes aimed to hurt Moscow’s war machine. Newsweek has contacted the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.

Russian officials frequently say that air defenses have intercepted Ukrainian drones, even as images of destruction are shared on social media. On Tuesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry touted success on Tuesday in thwarting the attacks by drones and Tochka-U tactical missiles.

Posts on social media misidentify US troops killed in air strikes

Posts misidentifying three US servicemen who died in a recent attack in Jordan are circulating online.

Three US troops were killed and more than 40 injured in a drone strike on a US military base near the Syrian border in Jordan on 29 January 2024.

Multiple posts on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) share a collage showing three photos each featuring a man in military uniform. It has been shared widely with the caption: “The picture is of three American who were killed in a drone attack by the resistance on the American base in Syria -Jordan border [sic]”.

However, the collage does not feature the soldiers killed in the January attack. The photos actually show three soldiers who were killed in Jordan in 2016, named Staff Sergeant Matthew C. Lewellen of Kansas,…

Thousands of school websites went down after ransomware strikes vendor

Written by Benjamin Freed

Thousands of schools in the United States and around the world have had their websites and some other functions knocked offline as a result of a ransomware attack targeting a major web host for K-12 institutions just as students prepared to return from the winter holidays.

The company, Finalsite, said Thursday it “identified the presence of ransomware on certain systems in our environment,” which led to its clients, spanning 110 countries, losing access to their websites and other online services.

The outages began on Tuesday, when Finalsite’s customers, like the school district in Oakwood, Ohio, began notifying students and parents that their websites…
