Hate-filled Kiwi Farms message board finds new home with Southwest Washington tech company

A small Vancouver web hosting firm with a history of helping controversial websites has recently struck a deal to help another notorious internet community.

Nick Lim, founder of VanwaTech, confirmed to OPB on Tuesday that his company is providing hosting services to Kiwi Farms, an internet message board under intense scrutiny for hateful content posted by some of its users.

According to NBC News, Kiwi Farms is currently at the “epicenter of vicious, anti-trans harassment campaigns,” with some users doxxing and filing false police reports against people.

The message board had temporarily fallen off the internet over the weekend. Its last web services provider, Cloudflare, blocked Kiwi Farms amid a heightened public pressure campaign. Cloudflare wrote that, in recent weeks, the message…

Ukraine’s tech diaspora races to mobilize Silicon Valley in war with Russia

OAKLAND, Calif., March 2 (Reuters) – Ukrainians working at Western tech companies are banding together to help their besieged homeland, aiming to knock down disinformation websites, encourage Russians to turn against their government and speed delivery of medical supplies.

They are seeking, through email campaigns and online petitions, to persuade firms such as internet security company Cloudflare Inc (NET.N), Alphabet Inc’s Google (GOOGL.O) and Amazon.com Inc to do more to counter Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Companies should try to isolate Russia as much as possible, as soon as possible,” said Olexiy Oryeshko, a staff software engineer at Google and a Ukrainian American. “Sanctions are not enough.”

The UK has long been a place of innovation, and the pandemic seems to have catalysed this further. During the recent lockdowns many discovered (or rediscovered) talents, skills and ideas, or simply dedicated more time to their existing passions. Through sharing posts on social…

Opinion | One Year After the Jan. 6 Attack, Parler’s C.E.O Grapples With Big Tech and Trump

After an angry mob attacked the Capitol last year and users on the right-leaning social network Parler organized, shared footage and called to “burn D.C. to the ground,” Kara Swisher grilled the platform’s co-founder and C.E.O., John Matze. The interview was cited in Apple’s decision to take Parler off its App store and Amazon’s decision to suspend web hosting service for Parler. Google also booted the platform off its Play Store. Parler effectively went offline because of these three moves, and Matze lost his job.

A year after Jan. 6, and with Parler back online, Swisher interviews the platform’s new chief executive, George Farmer. He’s bent on reviving Parler,…
