Google Cloud gets into web3 act with managed blockchain node service • TechCrunch

Five years ago the blockchain was blossoming in the enterprise, or so many companies had us believe. Back then, companies like SAP and IBM were trying to build blockchain practices, but while the technology sounded good to solve myriad problems in the enterprise, it never really took off.

Fast forward to 2022 and the blockchain comes under a new guise with the name web3 as an umbrella term and lots of VC money behind it. So perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the cloud platform companies want to get into the act.

To that end, Google Cloud announced today that it’s launching Blockchain Node Engine, which it’s billing as “a fully managed node-hosting for web3 development.” Earlier this year, the company announced that it was launching a new…

IDrive launches e2, a new S3-compatible object storage service – TechCrunch

Over the course of the last few years, IDrive, the company best known for its backup service, has slowly been adding more cloud computing features to its platform. It launched a developer-focused face recognition service back in 2019, for example, and then launched IDrive Compute, a VPS hosting service, last year. Today, the company is launching IDrive e2, a new S3-compatible object storage service, which it claims is often faster and cheaper than its competitors, like AWS’s S3 or Backblaze’s B2.

The company kept its pricing structure simple, with a free tier up to 10GB and anything above that costing $0.004/GB/month. AWS’s standard S3 tier starts at $0.023/GB/month, with some of its long-term archival services dropping down to $0.004/GB/month and below, but the use cases…

Zuddl raises $13M for its simple but powerful virtual events platform – TechCrunch

Will the world ever go back to big in-person events? Of course. Eventually. CES already moved in that direction this year, for better or worse.

But everyone’s already gotten a taste of virtual events, and their many ups and downs. Ups? Huge potential audiences! No flights! No mile-long lines to enter the horror show bathrooms! Downs? The tech side of things can get remarkably complicated, and it’s hard to make a virtual show more compelling/interactive/engaging than a YouTube video would be.

Virtual events (or, in many cases, hybrid virtual/physical events) are here to stay. Zuddl, a virtual events platform, has raised a $13.35 million Series A to make them easier to host, simpler to customize, and, hopefully, more engaging.

Co-founder Bharath Varma tells me that Zuddl’s…

GoDaddy says data breach exposed over a million user accounts – TechCrunch

Web hosting giant GoDaddy has reported a data breach with U.S. financial regulators, and warns that data on 1.2 million customers may have been accessed.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, GoDaddy’s chief information security officer Demetrius Comes said the company detected unauthorized access to its systems where it hosts and manages its customers’ WordPress servers. WordPress is a web-based content management system used by millions to set up blogs or websites. GoDaddy lets customers host their own WordPress installs on their servers.

GoDaddy said the unauthorized person used a compromised password to get access to GoDaddy’s systems around September 6. GoDaddy said it discovered the breach last week on November 17. It’s not clear if the compromised…
