The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony today (Oct. 14, 2023) to honor U.S. Army First Lieutenant Thomas M. Martin, son of career military parents, SGM Ed Martin  (U.S. Army retired) and CW5 Candy Martin (U.S. Army retired). 

The ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. (CT) at the South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance in Sioux Falls (1600 W. Russell Street).

The James River Bridge on US HWY 14, near Huron, will be dedicated to 1LT Martin.

Martin, who was born in Huron, was assigned to 1^st Squadron, 40^th Calvary Regiment, 4^th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne). He died October 14, 2007, in Al Busayifi, Iraq, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small-arms fire during combat operations.

MIAMI GARDENS — Isaiah Thomas made his first trip to Hard Rock Stadium a big one.

After watching his high school team, Clearwater Academy International, fall to The Benjamin School in Palm Beach Gardens on Friday night, the Miami commit was one of many UM pledges who were in town for the Hurricanes’ home game against Texas A&M.

“I’m honestly looking forward to seeing the environment,” Thomas told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “Seeing the fans get active. It’s the orange-out game. I’m excited to see the support and see the team go off.”

Thomas, a three-star safety, has been committed to Miami since April 19 and is still frequently in touch with the Hurricanes’ coaching staff.

Throughout the course of Dr. Lovejoy’s career, much of it based in the Washington area for organizations such as the Smithsonian Institution, the World Wildlife Fund and George Mason University, he became increasingly alarmed about climate change and the global extinction crisis. In spreading this message, he allied with lawmakers and Hollywood celebrities, often leading them on tours of his research station north of Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, known as Camp 41.
