Joe Biden signs the bill that could ban TikTok in the United States

The bill that will force a sale or ban of TikTok in the United States is now law. President Joe Biden signed a package of foreign aid bills that included the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act,” one day after the legislation was approved by the Senate.

In a statement, TikTok said it would challenge the law in court, which could delay an eventual sale or ban. “This unconstitutional law is a TikTok ban, and we will challenge it in court,” the company said. “We believe the facts and the law are clearly on our side, and we will ultimately prevail. The fact is, we have invested billions of dollars to keep U.S. data safe and our platform free from outside influence and manipulation. This ban would devastate seven million businesses and silence…

US Congress Passes Bill to Ban TikTok

The US Senate has voted on a bill that will either ban TikTok or force its parent company, ByteDance, to forfeit ownership of the social media app.

TikTok skeptics in the US claimed a landslide victory, with 79 senators voting in favor of the bill and 18 against.

The vote occurred on April 24, ten days after the House of Representatives passed the bill, titled Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applicants Act, by a margin of 360 to 58.

The final stage for the bill to be approved now is for US President Joe Biden to sign it into law.

He previously declared he would sign the bill if it passed both Congress chambers.

Trump says Biden would be ‘responsible’ for any TikTok ban

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Monday that President Joe Biden was “pushing” for a ban on TikTok and would be the one responsible if a ban were imposed, urging voters to take notice.

The US House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation on a 360-58 vote on Saturday that would give TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance about nine months to divest its US operations or face a ban.

The bill now moves to the Senate. If it passes there, Biden has said he would sign it into law.

Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday that Biden would be “responsible for banning TikTok. He is the one pushing it to close, and doing it to help his friends over at Facebook become richer and more dominant.”

Trump then urged younger voters – who make up a…

Will TikTok Launch A New Instagram Rival App?

There are conversations online stirring that TikTok wants to expand its offerings to beyond its video content. It has been reported that TikTok is in the works of launching TikTok Notes, a new platform for photo sharing. This would then place them in direct competition with long time photo sharing leaders, Instagram.

This is not a new trend in the social media and tech spaces, though. Last year, Instagram extended its medium to compete with long time text social media platform, now known as X. Their Threads app also caused a big stir, and throughout last year had its ups and downs. What will be the case for TikTok’s app?

Former White House CIO warns the tech industry should prepare for a TikTok ban

A hot potato: Could the TikTok bill, which would force owner ByteDance to sell the app or face a block from US app stores and web hosting platforms, become law? Former White House Chief Information Officer (CIO) Theresa Payton warns that US tech firms should prepare for the worst as ByteDance may not willingly divest its wildly popular app.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act was passed by Congress last month. If it comes into effect, Chinese owner ByteDance will be forced to divest TikTok within about 180 days; otherwise, the app will be blocked in the US. That could involve ISPs blocking traffic to TikTok, social networks might be forced to stop videos from the app being shared, and app stores will have to put TikTok on the banned…
