Students react to House-passed TikTok ban

197 Republicans and 155 Democrats voted last month to advance legislation that could force the sale of Tiktok. It faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation requiring ByteDance, a Chinese technology firm, to sell their popular social media platform TikTok or face a possible ban in the United States.

If it goes into effect, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act will require ByteDance to sell TikTok in six months or risk being banned from American app stores and web-hosting services. The legislation passed in a 352-65 vote, with 197 Republicans and 155 Democrats approving. Fifteen Republicans and 50 Democrats voted against the bill, and one Democrat voted present.

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird seeks to force TikTok to raise age rating to ’17+’ • Iowa Capital Dispatch

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird filed a lawsuit this week seeking to require TikTok to change its age rating in the Apple App Store.

Bird is seeking a temporary injunction that would require TikTok, a video social media app, to change its age rating to “17+” in the App Store until the lawsuit is resolved. The state attorney general sued TikTok in January, claiming that the app and its owner were deceiving parents with the current “12+” age rating, as some videos posted on the platform feature explicit material, including sexual content, profanity, drugs and self-harm.

Bird argued in the lawsuit that TikTok not abiding by the age warning system violates the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.

“It’s past time for TikTok to be honest with…

Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad TikTok? – Pagosa Daily Post News Events & Video for Pagosa Springs Colorado

The US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved legislation that would require TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell it within 180 days… or risk having the app barred from app stores and web hosting services in the United States.

The vote was 352 in favor; 65 opposed.  Pretty impressive disapproval of a social media company’s ownership model.  The supporters of the bill didn’t like the fact that ByteDance might be providing user data to the Chinese government, letting the Communists know which dancing cat video is most popular among Americans.

Our economic system is threatened.  And also, maybe our own home-grown social media empires.

One of the 65 Representatives opposed to the bill — Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky — suggested that “the bill…

Greenville, Spartanburg influencers react to US efforts to ban TikTok.

On Wednesday, the House approved a bill where ByteDance would be forced to sell TikTok or face a practical U.S. ban from app stores and web-hosting services if it is signed into law, according to a story in USA Today.

The bill gained bipartisan support passing the House 352 to 65. The bill is now on its way to the Senate where its fate is uncertain, and on March 8, President Joe Biden said he would sign it should it make it to his desk.

If signed into law, the bill would prevent app stores like Apple and Google from distributing or updating TikTok and web hosting companies from distributing it, according to an article in USA Today.

Social media influencers Bailey Lavender of Greenville and Spartanburg’s Jorden Hall are worried about the possible TikTok ban.
