Living in the past much? Security advice for US colleges warns on ancient iconic file-sharing systems — such as Kazaa and LimeWire

At the turn of the century, piracy was rampant on university campuses across America and beyond – with the arrival of high-speed internet, alongside file-sharing tools like Napster, Kazaa, LimeWire, and BitTorrent, fuelling a file-sharing craze among tech-savvy students.

In a bid to address this problem, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008 introduced measures requiring institutions to implement policies and educate students about copyright infringement. Failure to comply with the federal law meant that establishments risked having their funding removed. The effectiveness of these warnings is debatable, of course. They might have inadvertently promoted piracy by informing less knowledgeable students about the existence of various file-sharing programs, but I digress.

Former Pakistan Cricketer Warns India Amid Uncertainty Over Champions Trophy Participation

Champions Trophy 2025: Former Pakistan cricketer Rashid Latif has said that the Indian cricket team will need to come up with a logical answer to the ICC if they choose against travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy next year.

Pakistan are the dedicated host for the tournament which was last played in 2017 but it still remains doubtful whether the Indian team will be travelling there to play.

While India haven’t played in Pakistan for a long while now, Latif believes that refusing to feature in an ICC tournament can have negative impacts and the team might face consequences as well.

Former White House CIO warns the tech industry should prepare for a TikTok ban

A hot potato: Could the TikTok bill, which would force owner ByteDance to sell the app or face a block from US app stores and web hosting platforms, become law? Former White House Chief Information Officer (CIO) Theresa Payton warns that US tech firms should prepare for the worst as ByteDance may not willingly divest its wildly popular app.

The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act was passed by Congress last month. If it comes into effect, Chinese owner ByteDance will be forced to divest TikTok within about 180 days; otherwise, the app will be blocked in the US. That could involve ISPs blocking traffic to TikTok, social networks might be forced to stop videos from the app being shared, and app stores will have to put TikTok on the banned…

China warns TikTok ban ‘will come back to bite the United States’ and insists there is ‘no evidence’ the app threatens American national security

The Chinese Communist Party shared an ominous warning the same day U.S. lawmakers advanced a bill that could ban Chinese-owned TikTok nationwide.

The House passed the bill Wednesday morning in a bipartisan vote 352 – 65.

The House China Select Committee says Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials through ByteDance are using TikTok to spy on its U.S. users’ locations and dictate its algorithm to conduct influence campaigns, making it a national security threat.

ByteDance would have five months after the law is signed to divest from TikTok. If it does not, app stores and web hosting platforms would not be allowed to distribute it in the U.S.

Ahead of the vote, a spokesman for the CCP railed against the key claims made by Republican and Democrat lawmakers in their push to get the…

Elon Musk Warns TikTok Bill Is ‘About Censorship And Government Control’

On Tuesday, billionaire tech executive and X owner Elon Musk raised concerns about a bill making its way through Congress that seeks to clamp down on U.S. access to social media applications such as Chinese-owned TikTok unless they sever ties with foreign adversaries that are deemed a national security threat.

Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist” who championed the “Twitter Files,” responded to a post from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) highlighting text from the legislation that addresses websites and businesses that provide services to social media platforms found to be in violation of proposed law.

“The so-called TikTok ban is a trojan horse. The President will be given the power to ban WEB SITES, not just Apps. The person breaking the new law is deemed to be the U.S….
