Rise in Fraud Anticipated with Increased AI Use in Finance, Warns UK Watchdog

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the United Kingdom’s chief financial watchdog, has issued a warning about the increased risk of fraud associated with the growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence, or AI, in financial services.

While AI can provide endless benefits, such as cutting prices for consumers and streamlining operations, it may also pose significant threats to market integrity and consumer protection if not properly managed.

The watchdog has already observed how volatility during a trading day has doubled and amplified compared to during the 2008 global financial crisis.

“This surge in intraday short-term trading across markets and asset classes suggests investors are increasingly turning to highly automated strategies,” the watchdog says.

UN Calls for Global AI Watchdog

MarTech industry experts have given their support to calls for a new global AI watchdog. The call to action comes as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave his backing to a proposal by leading artificial intelligence executives for the creation of an international AI watchdog body like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Generative AI technology that can spin authoritative prose from text prompts has captivated the public since ChatGPT launched six months ago and became the fastest growing app of all time. AI has also become a focus of concern over its ability to create deepfake pictures and other misinformation.

How safe is your web host? Israel’s cybersecurity watchdog plans rating system

The National Cyber Directorate is proposing setting up a safety standard for providers of website hosting services, to let businesses that use their servers know how secure their data will be and choose accordingly.

Web hosting service providers allocate space on their servers for websites to store their files, so they can be available for online viewing. All websites are hosted on a server.

The idea to rank the providers stems from an incident last May in which thousands of Israeli websites were defaced at the same time, showing anti-Israel messages. When the directorate investigated the matter, it found that the hackers managed to inflict their damage by penetrating just one website hosting provider.
