PEOPLE confirmed that the groundbreaking daytime TV vet “passed away peacefully following a long illness”

Stars are remembering groundbreaking daytime TV vet Phil Donahue after his death.

Donahue died at home on Sunday, Aug. 18 at age 88, per a statement shared with PEOPLE. He was surrounded by his wife of 44 years — actress Marlo Thomas — as well as “his sister, his children, grandchildren and his beloved golden retriever, Charlie.”

He “passed away peacefully following a long illness,” the statement concluded, noting that Donahue’s family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.

Watching from the comfort of her own couch, the Fever’s All-Star rookie won two awards — Best Record-breaking Performance after becoming the NCAA’s Division I all-time scoring leader during her senior year at Iowa — and the Best College Athlete, Women’s Sports.

Williams’ spearheading of the show included a monologue where she sent shots to Drake with a joke referencing the feud between him and Kendrick Lamar.

“If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us, not a single one of us, not even me, should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar,” the multiple Grand Slam champ said as she C-walked to “Not Like Us.” She continued, “He will make your hometown not like you.
