Multiple SMTP Servers Vulnerable to Spoofing Attacks

Multiple SMTP Servers Vulnerable to Spoofing Attacks

A recent discovery has unveiled vulnerabilities in multiple hosted, outbound SMTP servers, allowing authenticated users and certain trusted networks to send emails with spoofed sender information.

These vulnerabilities, CVE-2024-7208 and CVE-2024-7209, exploit weaknesses in the authentication and verification mechanisms provided by Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and Domain Key Identified Mail (DKIM).

Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance (DMARC), which builds on SPF and DKIM, is circumvented, enabling attackers to bypass security measures and spoof sender identities.

When you register a new domain, you are asked for three sets of contact details: registrant (owner), technical, and administrative. Even if it’s the same person each time, all three sets of information need to be included. Each set includes a name, postal address, email, and phone number.

It is important to note that providing false information is not allowed – as well as being a bad idea – and that you’re obliged to keep everything up to date.

At least some of these details are publicly accessible through a WHOIS lookup. For instance, every .nz domain’s information is available via…

Microsoft Says AI Deepfake Abuse Should Be Illegal

Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere these days, doing good by helping doctors detect cancer and doing bad by helping fraudsters bilk unsuspecting victims. Now, Microsoft says the US government needs new laws to hold people who abuse AI accountable.

In a blog post Tuesday, Microsoft said US lawmakers need to pass a “comprehensive deepfake fraud statute” targeting criminals who use AI technologies to steal from or manipulate everyday Americans.

“AI-generated deepfakes are realistic, easy for nearly anyone to make, and increasingly being used for fraud, abuse, and manipulation — especially to target kids and seniors,” Microsoft President Brad Smith wrote. “The greatest risk is not that the world will do too much to solve these problems. It’s that the world will do too little.”
