The problem with using shared hosting with old MySQL is that the server likely hasn’t been updated in ages, leaving many security concerns. Almost all decent providers use recent versions of MySQL.
This is one of the few situations where I would recommend a user go with a VPS – where they can run their own version of MySQL. That is – if they are intent on not upgrading the installation and want to keep it live.
