Springfield area bridge to be dedicated today in honor of U.S. Army Lieutenant Peter H. Monfore

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony at 2pm CT this afternoon (Sept. 16, 2023) to honor U.S. Army Lieutenant Peter H. Monfore, son of Howland and Gertrude Monfore of Springfield and Sioux Falls.

The ceremony will be at the Community Services Center in Springfield (605 8th Street).

The Emanuel Creek Bridge on SD HWY 50, west of Tyndall, will be dedicated to Lt Monfore.

On September 19, 1951, his company was ordered to lead a night assault on Hill 851 during the battle of Heartbreak Ridge in North Korea. His company was successful in capturing Hill 851. Monfore was killed in action that day while defending his position on Hill 851.

Hiero Day Showcases Lasting Love for Hip-Hop in Bay Area

Beats and rhymes brought thousands of Bay Area residents and visitors to Oakland’s Frank Ogawa Plaza on Labor Day to enjoy the 11th version of Hiero Day, a music block party thrown by the Hieroglyphics Crew.

But a love of community and valuing of its keepers were what kept crowds happily greeting one another, complimenting outfits, sampling snacks from food trucks, dancing to familiar fast favorites or swaying and snapping selfies before slower classics.

Chamberlain area bridge to be dedicated today in Honor of US Army Specialist Five Samuel J. Jorgensen

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony at 2pm this afternoon (July 7, 2023) to honor U.S. Army Specialist Five Samuel J. Jorgensen.

The ceremony will be at the Chamberlain Community Center (112 N. Main Street). The Nelson Creek Bridge on SD HWY 50 will be dedicated to SP5 Jorgensen.

In connection with ground operations against a hostile force on February 14, 1970, Jorgensen heroically distinguished himself while serving as a loader with Company M 3rd Squadron, 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Troop C, with Specialist Jorgensen’s platoon attached, was summoned to aid an infantry unit who had engaged a well-entrenched enemy force. Aberdeen area bridge to be dedicated today in honor of US Army Private First Class Cy Kaiser

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs will be hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony later this month to honor U.S. Army Private First Class Cy Kaiser.

The ceremony will be today (June 22, 2023) at 1:30 p.m. (CT) at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Aberdeen (115 S. Roosevelt Street).

The US HWY 12 Bridge south of Lake Mina will be dedicated to PFC Kaiser.

While serving with the 104th Infantry Division, Kaiser died a hero’s death November 21, 1944, when he was killed in action in Germany.

Naming bridges in honor of our combat veterans who died while serving their country is an initiative of Governor Kristi Noem and the South Dakota Departments of Military, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs.

Volga area bridge to be dedicated today in honor of U.S. Army Corporal Kenneth L. DeGroot

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs is hosting a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony today (May 31, 2023) to honor U.S. Army Corporal Kenneth L. DeGroot.

 

The ceremony will be at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at the CC Bar and Grill  in Volga (121 Kasan Avenue).

 

The eastbound Big Sioux River Bridge on US HWY 14  will be dedicated to CPL DeGroot.

 

DeGroot, was a member of the 77th  Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Calvary Division and was  killed in action while fighting the enemy in North Korea on September 7, 1951.
