Amazon’s Parler ban displays Big Tech’s power over online speech — Quartz

Parler—the rightwing social media platform that sought to carve out a niche for itself by refusing to moderate conspiracy theories, hate speech, and incitements to violence—is searching for a new home.

The platform got kicked offline after extremists used Parler to coordinate the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol. But it wasn’t American courts, elected officials, or law enforcement agents who gave it the boot: That responsibility fell to a trio of Big Tech companies whose infrastructure helps form the backbone of the internet.

The BBB of Abilene and The Big Country is alerting the public about Web Host Agents, a company attempting to scam businesses.

The BBB of Abilene and The Big Country is alerting the public about Web Host Agents, a company claiming to be located in New York and sending unsolicited invoices as far as The Big Country, including sending one to the BBB of Abilene. John Riggins, CEO of the BBB of Abilene warns, “We are sharing this alert so people can take measures to protect themselves against this type of scam.”

Businesses and consumers reported to the BBB of Metro New York that they received solicitations from Web Host Agents that look like invoices for services associated with domain hosting; yet, most reported that they had not done business with the web hosting service.
