ANN ARBOR, MI – A training center used by firefighters across Washtenaw County is being named after a veteran Ann Arbor firefighter who was key in making it possible.

The Ann Arbor Fire Department is hosting a dedication ceremony Friday, May 7, at the W.R. Wheeler Service Center naming the countywide fire training center the “Craig Sidelinger Fire Training Center” in honor of the training captain who died of cancer earlier this year.

“Craig was instrumental in getting this training center going and it has been valued and used by departments throughout the county,” Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy said.

The Los Angeles-based web hosting provider WebNX recently experienced a fire at its Ogden data center in Utah which took the websites of some of its customers offline.

Unlike the major fire that recently took the French web host OVH offline, WebNX’s problems began with a city-wide power disruption. As is often the case in such a situation, the company’s backup generators automatically switched on following the power outage. However, one of the older backup generators caught fire and the Ogden fire department was called in.

An emergency generator caught fire at a data center in Ogden, Utah over the Easter weekend, causing the full shutdown of the data center and lengthy outages for customers. The incident at a WebNX facility comes a month after a more serious fire that destroyed an entire OVH data center in Strasbourg, France.

Dedicated server hosting firm WebNX says a backup generator experienced a “catastrophic failure” Sunday afternoon, and fire officials opted to cut power to the entire building. The company says a small number of servers may have suffered water damage as emergency crews battled the generator fire.

A major fire has destroyed a data center of web hosting provider OVH in Strasbourg, France, while severely crippling another, taking many services offline.

News of the catastrophic incident was confirmed by OVH CEO Octave Klaba on Twitter, with a statement on the company’s website adding, “We are currently facing a major incident in our DataCenter of Strasbourg with a fire declared in the building SBG2. Firefighters were immediately on the scene but could not control the fire in SBG2. The whole site has been isolated, which impacts all our services on SBG1, SBG2, SBG3 and SBG4.”
